Mentor Development Program

“The best way to find oneself is to lose yourself in service to another.” – Gandhi

The Mentor Development Program is an extension of Mastery Level Mentoring for people who want to develop their own capacity to mentor others within the context of their personal life, their existing professional career, or as a means of starting a professional mentoring practice. Mentoring can take place between a parent and their child or their child’s peer group, a supervisor with an employee, an upperclassman to an incoming freshman, an older sibling to his younger brother or sister, a teacher to a student, a friend to a friend in need. Whatever the context might be for you, the material in this program will make you a more effective, authentic, and impactful leader, role model, and resource for those around you.

In this program you will work one-on-one with James immersing yourself in the 7 Stage Process. Here you will get to experience for yourself the step by step journey of the 7 Stages while learning the tools and skills necessary to effectively facilitate this process as a mentor. Here is an overview of the 7 Stages of our Mentor Development Program:

  • Starting in Stage 1, Intention, we will set the context of this course by introducing the fundamental principles of mentoring and the themes that will run through each of the 7 Stages. We will explore the concept of purpose and begin cultivating your intention for becoming a Noble Mentor.
  • In Stage 2, Connection, we will be focusing on listening and communication skills. You will learn to hold this unique role of being a mentor and how to build a solid base of rapport and trust with your clients. It is this foundation of connection that makes the work of stage 3 and 4 possible.
  • In Stage 3, Revelation, we will explore the 12 Essential Aspects, a tool used to identify what is working and not working for your client. From here we will look at how a mentor works with the patterns of anxiety, depression, addiction, and distorted thinking. You will learn how to effectively identify needs, navigate discomfort, and reveal the core areas of work in yourself and in your clients. Stage 3 concludes with creating a vision for the future.
  • In Stage 4, The Turn, we will take what has been revealed in Stage 3 and turn it into actionable items. Here we will work with strategies around goal setting, making and breaking habits, utilizing organizational tools, and making practical changes in your life.
  • In Stage 5, Reflection, we will dig deeper into self-reflective practices, cultivating “the Witness”, developing insight and self-awareness, and learning and adapting from the successes and failures. Here our focus turns to identifying our deeper values and striving to live by a personal ethic.
  • In Stage 6, Service, we have arrived at a threshold of personal development, where service to another is essential for further growth. Here we will hone in on the more subtle ways of facilitating this process of evolution for another, integrating all of the previous work to create a shift in identity. In Stage 6 we will also cover how to work with family systems, as well as recognizing if and how to change the mentor/mentee context over time.
  • In Stage 7, Mastery, we will talk about endings and new beginnings and also introduce a greater context for not only our work but our lives.

Who is the Mentor Development Program designed for?

  • For mentors, individuals who through circumstance, necessity, or intent have found themselves in a position of having an influence upon another. In reality, we are all in this position somewhere in our lives.
  • For anybody who sees the value and importance of serving others and feels within themselves a calling to take part in this kind of intentional relationship.
  • For those who are willing to face the thresholds and challenges of life and fashion the successes and errors of this life experience into understanding, humility, compassion, and wisdom.
  • For those who crave to be exceptional, not by any external criteria, but by an inner standard of integrity and personal truth that inevitably yearns to contribute to others and the world at large in meaningful ways.
  • For those who want to live a life that is not all about “themselves” but instead about what can be given and who can be served. This is an expression of our true potential, and this is who the Mentor Development Program is designed for.

Who this program is not for?

  • This program is not for the casual or halfhearted person. It is not a “shortcut” or collection of “life-hacks” meant to offset the requirement of doing difficult things. If you want to play games, just get by, cut corners, keep things safe and comfortable, and maintain the status quo this is not for you.
  • This is not for someone who simply wants to collect ideas, unwilling to apply them in their own life.
  • This is not a get rich scheme. If your primary interest and motivation in mentoring is to make money or to pump up your ego, this program is not for you.
  • Thankfully mentoring does not require that you have all the answers or know all the solutions. Noble Mentoring does require an equal portion of strength and humility. People who have not yet found their independence (financial, emotional, and interpersonal) will likely struggle to incorporate this material, and should instead work first on developing these skills through the Mastery Level Mentoring program, before beginning the Mentor Development Program.
